Senior Bowl Buzz: Take Three

By Christopher Hart

Day 3 of the Senior Bowl is in the books, and by checking player / team observations at various sites, you’re sort of starting to see a trend here going on in Mobile in regards to the Broncos.

Denver has talked to several linebackers including Dan Connor, Gary Guyton, Shawn Crable, Jordan Dizon and Wesley Woodyard – which is more than any other position I’ve seen so it should be fair to note that they’re spending a lot of time at the position. What is particularly interesting is you have guys all over the board value wise in the list above. Connor is a consensus first round pick and Crable is expected to go somewhere in the second, perhaps third round at the latest. A guy like Woodyard has value at safety as well and could be a mid-round prospect and you have Guyton and Dizon being late-round types that have a lot of special teams potential, but limited starting potential in the NFL. (Guyton might be an exception, because he had a real solid year for GT and has experience at SAM and WILL.)

What should be noted about all this prospects is that they are pretty good blitzers and have the ability to get after the quarterback. Coincidence? Maybe, but it sounds like Slowik likes linebackers who have that kind of athleticism and ability. So I’ll draw the conclusion now: Any linebacker we take will be a guy who can blitz.

The other position which Denver seems to be talking to players at quite a bit is the defensive backfield. Tracy Porter heads the list of the top prospects overall the Broncos have been talking to on that side of the ball and he figures to be selected in round two or three. Other corners include Terrence Wheatley, Chevis Jackson and DeJuan Tribble who seem to be similar players that have limited starting potential, but could be solid nickel guys and special teamers at the next level. Tweener prospet Simeon Castille was also in the mix and is likely to be a mid-round pick, and the Broncos early on were reported looking at Michigan safety Jamar Adams.

Interestingly enough, the positions we’ve talked to the most players at are from the positions we sent position coaches Ryan (LB) and Bradford (CB/S) to; so perhaps there is something to that.

Denver has also been reported to be talking to interior lineman and not tackles on the offensive line; which has surprised me. Center Kory Lichtensteiger and guard Roy Schuening seem to top the list of prospects on the interior, and both figure to be selected somewhere early on Day 2. Other names that have rounded out the past few days are quarterbacks Colt Brennan and Chad Henne along with wide out Jordy Nelson, tight end Jacob Tamme and running back Chauncey Washington. Where it wasn’t a scout sighting, Andrew Mason was able to get a few words with Georgia Tech running back Tashard Choice, who seemed to be excited at the possibility of getting to play for the Denver Broncos and seemed honored to have the ability to carry on the tradition of a thousand yard back in Denver.

Expect more news from Thursday’s practices sometime later this evening when the goods are up online. In the mean time, check out a few of these pages to get your draft fix.
